The Truman Show

There may be some spoilers here.

My wife and I decided that "OK" describes this movie quite well. It's not the next Good Will Hunting, it's OK.

I felt the whole film plot was OK, it did get a bit dragged out and would have made a decent 30 min short instead. It seemed as if a lot of time was spent demonstrating to us how controlled Truman's life is, that he's really a prisoner, that the TV guys are bad, etc, etc. After the first few minutes it becomes apparent that he will eventually free himself from his predicament by movie's end and that there will be the inevitable denoument with the TV guys. I was just dismayed as to how long it took to happen.

Jim Carey's acting was OK, it wasn't really stunning but it wasn't nearly as hammy as say Gary Oldman (sorry, I couldn't resist the jab). Somehow I don't think Jim's really ever going to make a truely serious actor, I just have trouble sharing his pain 'cause he never really makes me believe.

I can't say that I really understand all the seemingly positive reviews that this one is getting. Maybe I'm out of the mainstream a bit but I can't do anything but rate this one as a matinee special.
